Cats

From the exhibition Miausótis at the Water Museum, Barbadinhos, Lisbon 2005. 

Women and cats share a silence that cannot be explained—it can only be felt.

Since ancient Egypt, cats have been figures of devotion and respect, associated with protection, intuition, and spirituality.

There exists an ancestral bond between these two beings, made of gazes, restrained gestures, and presences that inhabit the interstices of memory and mystery. From this symbolic heritage,Maria constructs her own feline iconography, where women and cats inhabit scenes that unfold in atmospheres where time almost stands still.

In Maria de Freitas paintings, the painter denounces the dancer and the dancer doesn't care.
